Transmedia Design

SCROLL DOWN

Transmedia Design

TransmediaDesignThinking

I specialise in Transmedia Narrative Design: the fusion of interdisciplinary languages, tools, & production techniques to merge identities & environments into multi-platform narratives.

When creating transmedia production designs I find it helpful to use similar project development methodologies to UX/UI/CX and platform designing. A unique aspect of transmedia designing considers everything from the perspective of the total environment. An identity or persona is therefore a reflection of the environment it emerges from. ideally, Environments and identities are a dynamically fluid expression of a confluent ecosystem.

Environments

I work alone or collaboratively to design digital & physical processes that create transformational conceptual environments. These environments form behavioural qualities & characteristics of identities and experiences.

Identities

Building off a strong environmental behavioural observations and insights I creatively and technically hone these insights into narrative voices or characters. Production outcomes form identities (assets) that in turn interact with environments and an iterative loop is created fostering ongoing symbiotic growth of both environment and identity. I call this Transmedia Permaculture.

Permaculture

Creative and technical big-picture 'aha' goals and objectives emerge. Production loops that continue to evolve beyond their primary purposes & relationships create an abundance of conceptual spatial awareness. Vibrant & meaningful relationships inform direction for diverse growth.

Carmen: A retrospective transmedia investigation exploring ideas of the feminine form in a state of immersion and abstraction within the changing face of technology.

The Project is a case study to centre ideas around digitization of femininity in dialogue By deconstructing objectification & stereotyping of identities into environments & experiences.

The project traverses digital and physical multimodality. Digital abstract art is video mapped onto the female physical form, photographed and videoed. This work also moves across various web publishing campaigns, International Web Projects & Virtual reality experiences installed in a gallery.

the 'carmen ecosystem' emerged from two research sources. French composer Georges Bizet's carmen and the 90s computer game 'Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego'. Both of these examples the feminine is depicted as uncontrollable, elusive, passionate, dangerous and mysterious - the femme fatale archetype.

Interdisciplinary

TransmediaIteration

essentially, Taking one or many design assets and working them across design mediums is at the heart of interdisciplinary design practice.

Below we see an example of a video and subsequent images of masks that were produced through the following interdisciplinary design process:

  • creation of motion image/pattern designs

  • video mapping of designs to a human performer/model

  • video capture of video mapped model

  • abstraction/post production of video capture

  • audio sync

Mask designs emerge from reconstructing video footage stills

All the above assets we then published with a record company as an audiovisual release that included integrated images, video and audio

The Cy Gorman AV design collection 'Carmen' was released internationally as a mixed media release & is available for download through www.heardandfelt.com

for site specific fabrication and installations of digital designs I focus on outcomes that maintain the integrity of core creative requirements whilst pushing the technical interplay between fabrication (identity) and site specificity (environment).

The alchemy of bridging ideas across digital and physical mediums whilst retaining focus & integrity of cultural identity is not just a question of automation & scalability,

It is a process & practice of mindfulness & care.

This is big picture thinking.
